A circular greenhouse gently sinks into the Icelandic landscape – a building part of a terrain of geological formations. Using standardised elements in greenhouse construction, the roof is following the topography, breaking into different heights that define zones to plant salad vegetables, berries or accommodate higher trees. The restaurant is placed on floating platforms surrounded by vegetation – immersed in the greenhouse but also the environment, where the different height and inclinations of the roof panels offer views towards and reflect back the landscape.
The kitchen and storage areas are on the same level as the platforms hosting the restaurant, interconnected by bridges that allow easy access while making space below for the technical area and zones to grow seedlings. Sunken in, surrounded by earth, the greenhouse’s thermal insulation is optimised and heating is provided through a geothermal probe.
The greenhouse is not only optimised in its construction and for growing fruits and vegetables, but the elevated restaurant provides an immersive experience in a building that subtly blends into its surroundings.
